The Political Skill and Background of Betsy DeVos

Betsy DeVos has something of a challenging introduction to the nation’s capital after she was nominated to serve as President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education. Specifically, upon the announcement that she was Trump’s choice to be Education Secretary, she faced a tough nomination hearing process in the Senate.

After grueling hearings, DeVos’ nomination proceeded to be voted on by the full Senate. The Vice President was called in to break what otherwise would have been a tie vote. The Vice President having to break a tie was a highly unusual situation.

The tough time DeVos had winning confirmation to the Cabinet post came as something of a surprise to many people who have known her for a more extended period of time. This includes people who consider DeVos to be skilled political tactician.

DeVos most definitely did not come to D.C. without political experience. She previously served as the Chair of the Michigan Republican Party. She has been active in multiple electoral campaigns, including for candidates and on issues.

DeVos has also been heavily involved in philanthropic work. A key area of focus for the Secretary has been in the realm of education choice. She has been a leader of the fight for education choice, not only in Michigan, but across the United States.

DeVos talents as a political were also on display directly after she was sworn in as Education Secretary. For example, during her first week on the job, DeVos reached out to the respective heads of the two largest teacher’s unions in the United States. One responded immediately, the other did not.

The one who quickly responded indicated that establishing at least some type of dialogue with DeVos was welcome. The leader who did not immediately respond noted that she was taking a wait and see approach.

Another indicator of her adeptness in the political arena involved the matter of public school restrooms and access by people from the transgender community. President Trump was contemplating overturning Obama Administration policy.

DeVos wanted to maintain Obama era policy, which permitted a person to utilize the restroom that most conformed with that individuals’ gender identity. She made her case with Trump. In the end, Trump elected to reverse Obama policy on this issue.

When he made that decision, DeVos was completely on Trump’s team. She even made a speech in the direct aftermath of the decision at a conservative confab fully supportive of the President’s decision.

She also called representatives of LGBT employees in her agency to meet with her before the President’s announcement about the change of policy. She explained her efforts to dissuade Trump to make such a change. She further explained that once the President made a final decision, she had to back her boss.
