The article, “Betsy DeVos is Publicly Polite, but a Political Fighter” published on the New York Time’s website offers a keen insight into the motivations of the formidable Secretary of Education. It is true that when DeVos was appointed, there were many that proclaimed she would simply be a figurehead or a puppet for other people’s agenda. The article describes DeVos as anything but a puppet and anyone that believes that she will stand by and be complacent in decisions that directly go against everything she has fought for may not be familiar with her career at all. DeVos has devoted many of her years to standing up for causes that have not always been popular. In fact, the article discusses her fierce opposition to the repeal of a mandate that would allow transgender students to go to the bathrooms that they identify with. DeVos was a huge advocate of this mandate and even took it upon herself to warn many employees that would have been affected. In her native Michigan, she also earned a reputation as committed. She fought hard against the Detroit Schools and many other school systems. She sees something in them that many are not willing to admit, they are subpar and underachieving. She even willingly admits that the charter schools she has campaigned so hard for are also in a state of underachievement. This does not mean that either should be completely scrapped, but that schools should be held to higher standards and there should be an overhaul of the education system. When compared to international education systems in other developed countries, that of the United States could use a large amount of work.
It can be easy to get lost in the things that people do, without looking at the reason they do things. DeVos is not running a crusade against education, she is running a crusade for it. While it is true that she is a huge advocate for school choice, she believes that there is a middle ground where people are agnostic about their children’s educational background. The education system defiantly needs an overhaul, and DeVos is not a passive puppet. She will continue to grow into her role as Secretary of Education and make good lasting changes that will benefit generations to come. DeVos will fight for what she believes in, and if history is to repeat itself, she will be successful.
